The current NIH rankings show that UCSF Neurology is number one nationally among departments of neurology at US medical schools. This ranking does not take into account the NIH support to our faculty at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center or the Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease.
The U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals list for 2015-16 ranking system considers 4,716 hospitals in 16 adult specialties and 10 pediatric specialties. In 2015-2016, UCSF made the honor roll of top medical centers. UCSF’s neurology services are ranked 3rd in California among hospitals that offer neurology & neurosurgery services. UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital achieved a “superior” rating for following best practices, using advanced technology, nursing intensity and use of infection-preventing measures. UCSF Medical Center scored high overall in patient safety, demonstrating commitment to reducing accidents and medical mistakes.

The UC San Francisco Department of Neurology has 135 Principal Investigators and 74 clinical trials underway at this time. We see over 28,000 patients in clinic each year. Four of our subspecialty clinics have been designated Centers of Excellence: The UCSF Regional Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis Center of Excellence, the San Francisco VA Epilepsy Center of Excellence, the UCSF Bachmann Strauss Dystonia and Parkinson’s Disease Foundation Center of Excellence and the UCSF Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Center, an ALS Association Certified Center of Excellence.
